FRI Dehradun


FRI Dehradun established as imperial forest research institute in the year 1906. Forest Research Institute, Dehradun is a leading institution under the Indian Council of Forestry Research & Education. Styled in Greeko Roman Architecture by C G Blomfield, the core building of the institute is a National Heritage which was inaugurated in the year 1929.

FRI Dehradun is one of the older institutions of its kind & commended the world over. The institute’s history is almost identical with the growth and development of systematic forestry, not only in the India, but over the entire sub continent also. Built over a lush green lands increase over 450 hectares, with the outer Himalaya forming its back drop, the FRI main building is an impressive structure with a base area of 2.5 hectares. The institute has a developed infrastructure of all outfitted laboratories, herbarium, library, printing press, arboreta and experimental field areas for conduct forestry research, quite in keeping with the best of its kind anywhere in the world. The FRI’s building also houses a beautiful Botanical Museum.

FRI also contains a museum based on forestry. It is open from 09:30 AM – 05:00 PM,  an entry fees of INR 25 per person. There are six sections:

Pathology Museum

Silviculture Museum

Entomology Museum

Social Forestry Museum

Non-Wood Forest Products Museum

Movies Krishna Cottage, Dulhan Ek Raat Ki, Kamra No. 404, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, Paan Singh Tomar, Student of the Year, Nanban, Dilli Khabar, Dear Daddy and Yaara were shoted in FRI campus. Television commercial Bournvita Ad was also shot in FRI. It is located at Dehradun Chakrata Road, near Ballupur Chowk.
